January 7th, 2025 BPC Meeting - "Dog Photography 101 - A Primer from Nose to Tail" by Joan Hustace Walker

Bio:

Joan H. Walker began her “dogcentric” career as a freelance writer/photojournalist, specializing in all things dog. Her first published article was 1990, as was her first nationally published photographs – both for the American Kennel Club Gazette.

Since that time, Walker has written hundreds of published feature articles and served as a columnist, as well as even more commercial and editorial dog photography images for regional, national, and international level publications.

Walker has also written nearly 30 books on dogs, dog breeds and dog training for noted publishers, including the #1 dog training book in 2019, which was awarded the Maxwell Award at a gala event during the Madison Square Garden Kennel Club Dog Show.

The move from editorial dog photography to a dog photography studio occurred ten years ago, when book publishers and magazines were moving more toward purchasing stock photography, as opposed to hiring specific dog photographers to create the images on the publisher’s shot list.

Currently, Walker and her husband, Randy, run a busy Florida dog photography business based in Jacksonville, Florida.

Description of the Presentation:

This class will cover everything for photographing dogs from What’s in the Gear Bag, to Understanding Dog Behavior (and why that’s critical for pet photography) and of course, all the tips, tricks and settings for four different types of sessions from sunrise to sunset and studio. Also included is a short post processing instruction.
